Guy Daniels' Story

Guy Daniels, a Surfside Beach native, collapsed on the beach while jogging in 1999. A rising sophomore at the College of Charleston and a Deans List student, he also served as a Life Guard and worked in a local Surf shop. Guy possessed the qualities of leadership, dedication, fortitude and kindness, all of which made him a respected member of his community and a positive mentor and role model for other youth.

Guy’s legacy and his love of surfing live on in the form of the Guy Daniels Memorial Surfoff. The two day event takes place in late August and the 2008 edition will be the 8th annual. The surf off feeds the Guy Daniels memorial fund which provides scholarships to local students based on need. The scholarships are $1000.00 each and the Board of Director’s goal is to award five scholarships each year.

Guys love for surfing transcended the sport and spilled over into a passion for keeping the beach and ocean clean and healthy. He knew that the health of the beach impacted everyone and strove to keep his community’s beach free of pollution.

All of Guy’s traits: love of surfing, academic success, community togetherness, and environmental awareness are all manifested in the spirit of the Surfoff.
